The Munchkin cat breed is a medium-sized cat with a long spine and extremely short legs. Munchkin has not the feline grace of long-legged cats, so cat’s movements are described as being like that of a ferret or polar fox. Munchkin cats have a dense body with a well-rounded chest. The breed may have long, middle or short hair. All variants have plush, all-seasons coats with a silky appearance. The Munchkin cat with longhair has a plumed tail. And they could be in any color or coat pattern and their almond-shaped eyes and can also be any color.  

The country of origin 

 This breed has caused controversy in the cat world, seen as the feline equivalent of the Dachshund. The Munchkin cat mutation was detected in America in 1983 where it was called after the ‘little people’ in The Wizard of Oz.

The first marks were registered in England in the 1930s and in Russia in the 1950s but these breeds were not perpetuated. A British veterinary informs in 1944 noted four generations of healthy short-legged cats. The Munchkin breed was similar to normal cats excluding for the length of the legs. Unfortunately, this line (as a Birman cat breed) disappeared during the Second World War but other short-legged cats were mentioned in Russia during 1956 and the United States in the 1970s. 

 In 1983, Sandra Hochenedel, a music teacher in Louisiana, found two pregnant cats who became a parent of today’s Munchkin breed. Thus, country of origin is the USA. 

 

The personality of the Munchkin cat breed 

Munchkin cats are tender and sociable. Their friskiness and curiosity continue well into maturity. The Munchkin cat breed is communicative and delights company. They may be taught to play fetch and to listen to voice commands. Whereas Munchkin cats breed may jump on to counter tops, most of them prefer to reasonably find an easier way up. Despite their short legs, they can also run fast.

The short legs of Munchkin breed is a deformation that is connected to the bones and vertebrae problems, so it has not been greeted by all cat associations. Dog breeds with the same spine structure are known to have problems with arthritis, joints and it is feared that some will happen in the Munchkin cat breed. As with all cats, Munchkins need yearly veterinary health checks, parasite control, and vaccinations. 

Grooming
